Can We Avoid Crib Death?
I personally feel we can avoid crib death. Also known as sudden infant death syndrome, (SIDS). Baby bedding can often contain compounds of the elements arsenic, phosphorus and antimony (a heavy metal). In many cases they are added as part of the manufacturing process such as fire retardant (FR) purposes.
Britain’s crib death rate was steadily on the upswing from the time antimony was first introduced into crib mattresses in the early 1950’s. The British government required a FR (fire retardant) to be added to crib mattresses by 1988. Now, much like our new mattress law, the manufacturers were given a 4 year warning, thus they started down the path of compliance with their new standard. As I understand it, Britain’s highest crib death rate was during 1986-1988 which coincided with the highest concentration of antimony being used in crib mattresses.
1994 British research showed high levels of antimony in the tissue of sudden infant death syndrome victims. From the research I have found, fungi and bacteria can cause toxic gas from the above mentioned chemicals when combined. It makes me sick to think we lose 8 babies to SIDS every day in the U.S. alone.
"Causes of SIDS?"
I am thoroughly convinced by European research results showing antimony (which is heavily used in China), leaches through vinyl on crib mattresses, linking this to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). What you're not told is that antimony is the easiest to control...just simply don't add it!
I believe the compelling evidence showing that the combination of phosphorus, antimony and arsenic in a crib mattress shuts down the central nervous system, resulting in stoppage of heart and breathing function, thereby becoming one of the highest causes of SIDS. "What to Avoid"
One of the largest retailer of crib mattresses' website (and I'm paraphrasing here) says that the top inside layer contains Fireblocker providing gentle sleeping and safety. Yet our manufacturer has found that crib mattresses contain 7.5% Boric Acid and 2.4% Antimony.
You need to be aware of the top ingredients to look out for and avoid when buying a mattress of any size. Click Here for a list of ingredients to avoid along with lots of interesting and helpful articles.
"What are the Health Effects of Boric Acid?"
How does Boric Acid get into our bodies? Good question, and I think you may find the information provided here helpful in answering your question.
I'm continually researching the causes of SIDS so feel free to check back often as I will be posting more and more of my findings on how to try to avoid crib death.
