How Safe Is YOUR Baby's Mattress?

Natural baby mattresses vs. an organic crib mattress. Don't think for one minute there isn't a difference between one baby crib mattress and another. While the evening news sheds light on the contaminated baby food, pet food and even meal worms, all stemming from China I might add.... very little is being said about the fact that boric acid, antimony (a metal used heavily in China) and arsenic can be found in our mattresses....child and adult alike.

Do you know what's in Your mattress? How would you...since the law doesn't even require the ingredients to be listed on the label?

We're always on the lookout for companies claiming to sell an "organic crib mattress" yet don't supply any evidence to back up their claims. Again, when looking for natural baby mattresses be careful and do your research.

Here's what an "organic" mattress manufacturer told our manufacturer when asked about the rubber they use in their mattresses.

Does this sound like an organic crib mattress to you?

When shopping for an organic crib mattress look for the manufacturer who is a NAOMI, (National Association of Organic Mattress Industry) member. We consider a baby crib mattress that fails to meet ALL the following criteria to fall under the category of natural baby mattresses and only those that DO meet ALL the following guidelines to be an organic crib mattress:

1. Must be free of synthetic fabrics

2. No fabrics may be treated with any chemicals suspected of being toxic, even at low levels.

3. All wool must be from sheep raised according to organic standards

4. Wool must be processed according to organic standards and be free of Polyester fibers. This requires that the wool is processed at a facility that does not process polyester or chemically laden cotton batting

5. Any wool used must be tested free of arsenic and lead

6. All inner, hidden fabrics and fibers, must be certified according to organic standards

7. All cotton batting used must be certified organic and processed according to organic standards

8. Any other natural fibers used must be certified organic (cotton, silk).

9. Fibers used must also be processed according to organic standards, no chemical processing allowed

10. Any rubber used must be tested free of benzene, toluene, pthalates, SBR, petroleum additives, formaldehyde, arsenic, lead at under .001 ppm

11. Any glue used must be free of formaldehyde, phenolated compounds and must be disclosed

I guess it goes back to the old saying, "you get what you pay for". There's like a KaJillion baby crib mattresses being sold out there as an organic crib mattress but I can only find one company who voluntarily has there product tested and they even test for antimony and arsenic. I believe the Research results that show a Link between toxic chemials in mattresses "off-gassing" and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Natural baby mattresses should not include harmful chemicals that your baby breathes in, day after day, night after night. Only a tested organic crib mattress is acceptable to me.
